Monument to Theodor Christomannos

The Christomannos monument, a bronze eagle, was dedicated to the South Tyrolean politician and tourism pioneer Theodor Christomannos (1854 -1911). The influential politician regarded the economic opening of South Tyrol as a life mission. As an avid climber and mountaineer, he devoted himself in particular to alpine tourism and also to the expansion of the region’s road network.

He was also responsible for the construction of the Rotwandhütte (Roda di Vael) hut in the south-eastern part of the Catinaccio. A monument dedicated to him stands nearby. The eagle was built in 1912. After partial destruction, the mighty bronze statue, measuring 2.50 metres in height, was rebuilt in 1959. Today, it can be admired by visitors on the Roda di Vaèl loop hike.
