The “Majon di Fascegn” Ladin Cultural Institute
The Ladin Cultural Institute is located in the old centre of San Giovanni, a small hamlet with an attractive architectural style and sober houses which surround the old parish church. The institute occupies the renovated Tobià de la Pieif. The hayloft dates backs to the building of the parish church (probably in the 9th- 10th centuries) and was use to collect and store the tithes paid to the local clergy. The building was acquired by the Autonomous Province of Trento in 1976, and after painstaking restoration work it became the “Majon di Fascegn”, the house of the Ladins of Val di Fassa.
The Ladin Cultural Institute aims to collect together, organise and study material relating to the history, economy, language, folklore, legends, tradition and customs of the Ladin people. The Institute also aims to promote awareness of the Ladin language, tradition and culture by working closely with schools and by using all possible means of information and communication.
